janusrig Happy Rhodes is a wonderful artist gifted with both: incredible voice AND incredible songwriting talent. Exploring this rabbit hole is such a pleasure. Too many great songs to pick a favorite track!

stargazing robot Happy Rhodes creates a very ethereal ambiance like diving into an electronic fairy tale. In general I found this album very stimulating visually.
It's a lot of fun to listen to the highs and lows of the canyon of her soundscape.
A very strong album. Favorite track: I Cannot Go On.

Sven B. Schreiber (sbs) Many compare her with Kate Bush, and I'll join in... actually, Happy Rhodes' voice sounds so Bush-alike in the higher octaves, that it's somewhat frightening. Moreover, the way how she writes and arranges her songs are not too far away from the later, more experimental works of the grand lady of art rock. That's not a coincidence - Happy Rhodes confirms Kate Bush as one of her main musical influences. This compilation of songs is hard to put into a category... the plain term "alternative" doesn't do justice to their originality. Her fans prefer to use the new genre name "ecto" for this kind of hard-to-describe music, and I'll leave it at that. Favorite track: I'm Not Awake, I'm Not Asleep.

about

The first authoritative compilation of American dream pop artist Happy Rhodes, whose singular songwriting and four-octave vocal range emanated from the pastoral confines of upstate New York in the 1980s. Her melding of classical music influences with synthesizer and acoustic guitar, and her enchanting and idiosyncratic singing, are favorably compared to heralded English chanteuse Kate Bush. Fans of such artistic pop music would be remiss to overlook Rhodes’s similarly remarkable and otherworldly sonic transmissions, traversing tales of dreamers, outsiders, lovers and other lovely and terrifying creatures born of a wellspring of wild creativity and bold imagination. Affectionately remastered from the original tapes, Ectotrophia gathers essential songs from Rhodes’s mid-'80s salad days, many written when she was just a teenager—wildly ahead of her time and unafraid to bare her soul to regional audiences, the ectophiles who’d eventually coin an entire subgenre of pop music in her honor. Dive deep into ecto, with the woman who started it all.
